Building Bridges Radio: Your Community & Labor Report

Produced and Hosted by Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash over WBAI,99.5FM in the NYC Metro Area

WHO WE ARE

WORKERS OF THE WORLD TUNE IN! Introducing "Building Bridges: Your Community & Labor Report"

Our beat is the labor front, broadly defined, both geographically and conceptually. We examine the world of work and workers on the job as well as where they live. We examine the issues that affect their everyday lives, with a particular sensitivity towards human rights abuses, environmental concerns and the U.S. drive for global domination. We record their global struggles and provide analysis of their efforts to empower themselves and transform society to provide greater democratic, human, social, political and economic rights. Each program consists of feature stories, generally interviews, within a historical context, often accompanied by sound from demonstrations, rallies or conferences, and complemented and enhanced by poetry and instrumental or vocal -- people's culture.

Over the years Building Bridges has produced a weekly one hour program, Mondays from 7-8 PM EST, covering local, national and international labor and community issues over radio WBAI-Pacifica 99.5 FM in New York. We also produce half hour version, Building Bridges National, which is distribtued to over 40 broadcast and internet radio stations.

End Mass Incarceration with Mumia Abu-Jamal, Angela Davis, Soffiyah Elijah, and Marc Lamont Hill

“And The Walls Came Tumbling Down”
with
Mumia Abu-Jamal, Angela Davis, Soffiyah Elijah,
and Marc Lamont Hill

Recalling in now its 41st year the Attica prison massacre of courageous prisoners who rose up against dehumanizing conditions, thousands came together to follow their lead and resist the burgeoning system of caging human beings.  Insisting that solitary confinement cease, that Attica be closed, and that the pipeline from community to prison be turned off, and rallying against what has now become referred to as the “New Jim Crow” the crowd reached a crescendo after Mumia Abu-Jamal, political prisoner, author, journalist and social critic, reached by phone spoke to them delivering a message that left everyone present with a sense of hope, good feeling and determination, to tear down the walls and shutter the prison-industrial system.

This extraordinary event was sponsored by the International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal; The Riverside Church Mission and Social Justice; the Riverside Church Prison Ministry; the Correctional Association of New York; the New York State Justice Network and the Campaign to End the New Jim Crow.

Abolish the Death Penalty - in memoriam of Troy Davis - 28:04

Do you know what it says on the death certificate for anyone
who’s executed?
with
Stephen Bright, President and Senior Counsel of the Southern
Center for Human Rights, law professor who twice argued and
won cases before the United States Supreme Court, involving
racial composition of the juries. He has testified on many
occasions before committees of both the U.S. Senate and House
of Representatives. His and the Center's work has been the
subject of a documentary film, "Finding for Life in the Death Belt",
and two books, "Proximity to Death" and "Finding Life on Death
Row".

When they say cause of death, do you know what the word is?
“It’s homicide”. Homicide! It certainly felt like murder watching the
TroyDavis hashtag tick away the last minutes of aman’s life. The
death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the
premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state.
While, this cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment is done in the
name of justice it violates the right to life as proclaimed in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Building Bridges opposes
the death penalty in all cases without exception regardless of the
nature of the crime, the characteristics of the offender, or the method
used by the state to kill the prisoner. This show, in memoriam of
Troy Davis (9/21/2011), Stan “Tookie” Williams, (12/13/2005),
Dominque Green (10/26/2004), and Gary Graham a/k/a Shaka
Sankofa (6,22/2000) to name but a few victims of state executions,
Stephen Bright makes the case for abolishing the death penalty

Fair Trade Votes; and Mumia Update from Philadelphia - 27:07

Election 2010: The Best Defense Was a Fair Trade Offense"
withTodd Tucker, Research Dir., Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch

That Democrats and the GOP alike ran against the trade policy status quo, highlights the intensity of public ire about our job exporting trade policy -- a phenomenon also seen in national polls. It also reveals the trouble that the White House and GOP leaders should face if they try to pass the leftover Bush trade pacts with Korea, Colombia and Panama. Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch, just released a report illustrating that House Democrats that ran on fair trade platforms in competitive and open-seat races were three times as likely to survive the GOP tidal wave than Democrats who ran against fair trade. We’ll discuss the findings of the report “Election 2010: The Best Defense Was A Fair Trade Offense”.
