New National Taxi Union Fights Highway Robbery,
Demanding Owners Stop The Greed & Lower The Lease!

The NY Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) rallied at SLS Jet Garage
in Long Island City, Queens, who has a practice of not allowing drivers
to pay lease in advance for their shifts, and then charging those same
drivers as much as $25 per day for not paying in advance, adding up
to more than $9,000 a year. NYTWA has been targeting SLS Jet for
its current Stop the Greed, Lower the Lease campaign. We will also
discuss the NTWA’s, as new chartered union with the AFL-CIO, which
will be celebrated at an upcoming reception with AFL-CIO President
Richard Trumka in NYC. The new National Taxi Workers Alliance,
the 57th chartered union of the AFL-CIO, is a watershed moment in
U.S. Labor History. This is the first new charter for non-traditional
workers in over 60 years & the first for independent contractors.

NYPD Surveillance of Muslims Extended To Activist
Organizations
With Speakers from:

Brotherhood; Peoples’ Justice for Community Control
& Police Accountability; CAAAV Organizing Asian
Communities; & NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez

Representatives from the Muslim community with civil liberties
advocates came to Police Plaza to decry the NYPD Intelligence
Division’s blanket surveillance of a community based on religion
and race, and to condemn new revelations about surveillance of
community-based advocacy groups. Recent documents unearthed
reveal that the NYPD surveilled dozens of community organizations,
over the last decade. One document reveals that an undercover
NYPD officer traveled to New Orleans to attend the People's
Summit, a gathering of groups organized around their shared
opposition to U.S. economic and trade policies. The undercover
effort entailed groups opposed to U.S. immigration policy, labor
laws and racial profiling. The new revelations heighten & broaden
the serious questions that have yet to be answered by the NYPD
and elected officials surrounding it's Muslim surveillance program
accusing Police Commissioner Kelly of overstepping his authority
with surveillance tactics that critics claim violate the U.S.

Newark Activists In Fifty-Fourth Day Of Protest Calling on U.S. Government To Institute Jobs Program

The U.S. economy is struggling, but in many black communities Americans
are in the throes of a depression. With unemployment exacting an outsize
toll on African-American men and women, a coalition of community groups
sees it as a crucial civil rights issue emerging from the country’s economic
woe. "We are more than a half-century away from the Montgomery bus
boycott, but we are dealing with issues just as pressing," said Larry Hamm,
chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress. Flanking a statue of
Abraham Lincoln outside the Essex County Courthouse, Hamm and like-
minded activists started a 381-day protest modeled after one of the most
famous battles of the Civil Rights era — the Montgomery bus boycott in
1955-56. They are calling on President Obama and Congress to institute
a jobs program akin to the Works Progress Administration of the Great
Depression, that employed millions of unskilled Americans in public works
jobs. Unemployment is 16 percent among black Americans, a rate rivaling
those of the 1930s. New Jersey’s jobless rate is 9.5 percent, while the
national rate is 9.1 percent.

AFL-CIO Pres. Trumka:
History Will Judge Pres. Obama If He 'Nibbles' at the Jobs Crisis

At a recent forum sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, AFL-CIO's.
Richard Trumka urged President Obama to “propose bold solutions on the
jobs crisis,” and not nibble around the edge of the issue and that, “history
will judge him and I think working people will judge him. on what he
proposes on the jobs crisis. Trumka said that, in a conversation with
Pres. Obama “I urged him to propose what was necessary to solve the
problem” as opposed to what the president thought was politically possible
given Republican control of the House of Representatives. Mr. Trumka
added, “I said to him,'Do not look at what is possible, look at what is
necessary. The American public wants solutions and just because [of] the Republicans, you think this is the only thing that is politically possible, that
doesn’t mean you should propose that. That means they control the agenda.' ”

Thousands of people marched on Wall Street April 29, in a major protest of financial sector greed and lending practices by big banks. Taking to the streets of downtown Manhattan, 10,000 labor and community groups shouted and jeered at the offices surrounding them, demanding three major changes to Wall Street culture. The first is to call off the lobbyists fighting regulatory reform. The second is to stop the incessant focus on market speculation over business lending. The third is to tax Wall Street to fund job creation The rally, was one of the largest in recent memory to take place at the epicenter of finance capital Wall Street.

National Nurses United, the nation’s largest union of registered nurses, criticized the healthcare bill passed by the U.S. Senate saying “it is tragic to see the promise from Washington this year for genuine, comprehensive reform ground down to a seriously flawed bill that could actually exacerbate the healthcare crisis and financial insecurity for American families, and that cedes far too much additional power to the tyranny of a callous insurance industry.” NNU believes that the bill seems more likely to be eroded, not improved, in future years due to the unchecked influence of the healthcare industry.

San Francisco Hotel Workers Heat Up the New Year

Over 1400 hotel workers and their community allies demonstrated in down-
town San Francisco, on Jan 5 against major hotel corporations’ refusal to
settle fair contracts. They were joined by Richard Trumka, President of the
AFL-CIO, and UNITE HERE President John Wilhelm, who along with over
150 union members and community supporters sat down in front of the Hilton
Hotel to launch a customer boycott of the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
The action comes after nearly five months of negotiations and street actions
(including strikes), in which Hotel Managements have called for cutbacks while
the workers have been seeking modest increases to sustain health care and
retirement benefits. Meanwhile, despite the economic downturn, major hotel
companies have continued to prosper.

Trumka took to the streets as part of the new leadership team’s national tour to set out a jobs-focused, progressive vision for the economy, and to fight back against the

Low-wage workers are routinely denied overtime pay and are paid less than the minimum wage, according to a new study based on a survey of workers in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The study, the most comprehensive examination of wage-law violations in a decade, concludes that "the sheer breadth of the problem, spanning key industries in the economy, as well as its profound impact on workers, entailing significant economic hardship, demands urgent attention."
